Tom Boyd has a long back record of watching honest mistakes as a Celtic player, fan and Celtic TV pundit.

Honest mistakes are nothing new to the former Scotland defender as a variety of referees come up with decisions that defy logic and in some cases the Laws of the Game.

Leading 1-0 at home to Ross County Celtic were in dazzling form to match the spring sunshine with the scent of the SPFL title in the air.

Jota switched over to the right to cause panic in the visitors defence, Joseph Hungbo was out of his comfort zone when he faced upto the on-loan Benfica winger.

Looking up to see the options available Jota directed a cross into the centre of the penalty box, Hungbo responded by lifting his left arm to block the cross, striking the ball above his elbow.

All eyes turned to referee Don Robertson, watching with an uninterrupted view from about 15 yards away.

Tuning into the match on Celtic TV, the Daily Record reports Boyd saying:

It is certainly worth a shout from the team and the players. Regardless of the distance, he lifted his arms out. I’m going with the handball.

I’m still in disbelief at that, honestly. It’s quite amazing, if the referee has given it for distance then he thinks it has hit his arm, otherwise he would have just waved play on.

In terms of distance, he thinks it has hit his arm, he (Hungbo) has moved his arm, he has deliberately made the movement to make himself bigger.

It should be a stonewall penalty, how is that not a penalty? It’s not often I’m wrong Gerry, but I think I’m right again.

Robertson seemed to indicate that the two players were too close together for him to give a penalty. That holds up if Jota had fired in a waist-high cross, he didn’t, Hungbo raised his arm to block and ridiculously Robertson refused to blow for a penalty.
