Ally McCoist has hinted that Alfredo Morelos could have gone AWOL on international duty.

Last night the Ibrox ace was left out of the 22 man matchday squad to face Bolivia in a World Cup qualifier due to muscle overload.

Morelos has been substituted in his last three club appearances, after being taken off at Dundee on Sunday he had a ice pack on his left thigh.

Despite that knock the striker was quick to report for international duty and a trip back home, despite missing the Bolivia match there is no suggestion that he’ll be returning to Ibrox for treatment on his muscle overload.

McCoist knew a few tricks to duck and dive out of training sessions during his playing days, speaking to Football Scotland he was happy to speculate about Morelos missing the Bolivia match:

I noticed he wasn’t in the squad. His recent form has been excellent for Rangers, particularly in Europe.

But generally speaking, he hasn’t been playing in the national team and I thought initially that was the reason he hadn’t been picked.

Then I read it was an injury concern. Call me old fashioned but if that’s the case, I’d have him on the first flight back to have a look at him and assess him.

But I don’t know how it works these days with international players – they can sometimes go AWOL you know!

Last summer Morelos played for 16 minutes during Colombia’s seven match Copa America campaign. Asked when he’d be back in Scotland Steven Gerrard admitted that he’d no idea, despite having Kemar Roofe suspended Morelos return to Scotland too late to play in the fateful 2-1 defeat away to Malmo.

Is ‘muscle overload’ an actual diagnosis or just a dodgy Google Translation of the Spanish for ‘sprain’ or ‘dead leg’?
