Now he is God’s gift- Dalglish takes a very dry look on Celtic turnaround

During his first couple of months as Celtic boss experts like Hugh Keevins and Kris Boyd were tipping Ange Postecoglou for an early Celtic exit. 

John Barnes and Tony Mowbray didn’t see out a season as Celtic boss, three defeats in his first six SPFL matches and a Champions League KO from Midtjylland suggested that Postecoglou had taken on too big a job. 

It was a huge task that he took on, the failed policies of Peter Lawwell and Neil Lennon has left the Celtic squad on its knees. Callum McGregor was still around, backed by a few bit part players like Nir Bitton, Tom Rogic and James Forrest. Tony Ralston had dropped to fifth choice behind Hatem Abd Elhamed, Jeremie Frimpong, Kris Ajer and Jonjoe Kenny for a game at right-back. 

Fire the scene forward seven months and the chat around Postecoglou is entirely different. 

Discussing the switch in attitudes towards the Celtic boss, Kenny Dalglish told The Sun: 

The boy has come, he was getting the sack after two weeks, he was rubbish and all the rest of it. Now he’s God’s gift. And because he’s God’s gift, people want to move him on or say, ‘Should he get a better contract?’. Jesus, give the guy a chance to breathe. He has done brilliantly. Everything else will follow. Whatever is going to happen will happen 

Postecoglou still has more than a month to get through in his debut season but everything around Celtic is unrecognisable from the handover that he walked into just under a year ago.
