The sight of Steven Gerrard on BT Sport brought back some very strong emotions for Tom English.
Just like with last year’s Olympics and Lions Tour, the chief sports writer at BBC Scotland watched the Champions League Final from his sofa, depriving licence payers of his unique insight, adding colour and depth to the biggest sporting occasions.
In the heat of last summer Succulent Tam tipped Gerrard to deliver a domestic treble and make progress in the Champions League. A pre-season friendly against Real Madrid had such an effect on him that he fantasised about an Ibrox Reserve side probably finishing runners-up in the SPFL Premiership.
Even in the kindest light Mister Gerrard is as dull as dishwater. Carefully groomed throughout his career there is nothing that media advisers and managers can do for someone with a complete lack of charisma. A sort of Scouse Steven Thompson.
Tragically for English he never got to sit in the company of the Liverpool legend during his three and a half years in Glasgow. Gazing out the Pacific Quay studio longingly towards Ibrox was as close as he got to the full Slippy Gee experience.
Absence has certainly made the heart grown stronger with the egg-chasing expert at BBC Scotland sharing his feelings for the manager that chucked away a two goal lead in 10 minutes at Manchester City to again deny Liverpool an EPL title.
During the Ireland v Scotland Six Nations rugger in March, English, known as House Paddy within BBC Scotland, was snubbed by the Irish media pack.

His smugness and self styled superiority is carrying the TV off to mute.

The really interesting thing to take from this email, is the collaboration in fabricating a narrative to get a point across.
It’s all staged.“Tom English has said he’ll have a pop at Paul Murray… Scotsman used his comments on the back page with our responses ie. irrelevant.” pic.twitter.com/UQz9KDfDZQ
