Ange Postecoglou is stepping up his control of Celtic with Harry Kewall about to join his backroom team as first team coach.

There is no current vacancy but a year after Celtic announced the appointment of the former Yokohama Marinos Sky Sports, the only outlet given an anniversary interview with the Celtic boss, have trailed the appointment of the former Leeds and Liverpool winger.

Former Australia star Harry Kewell is set to join Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou’s backroom team.

Kewell, 43, has been out of work since being sacked by side Barnet last year after just four months in charge of the National League side.

Postecoglou revealed he decided against adding to his coaching setup initially and was assisted by John Kennedy, while Stephen McManus, Gavin Strachan and Stevie Woods made up the backroom team.

However, after clinching the Scottish Premiership title and League Cup in his first season, Postecoglou has turned to the former Liverpool and Leeds attacker who will join as a first-team coach.

Alongside Mark Viduka, Kewall was the face of Australian football in the EPL at the start of the century, impressing at Leeds but not quite managing to fullfill his promise and potential when he moved to Liverpool in 2003.

Coaching and management has been something of a struggle with spells at Watford, Notts County, Oldham and Barnet without any sign of success.

Postecoglou knows the qualities of a couple of generations of Australians, Kewall’s coaching CV hardly stands out but working alongside a national icon at an elite level club is very different from a seven match stretch with Barnet in the fifth tier of English football.

If its not broke don’t change it. I’m not sure that this appointment is progressive, would’ve preferred a 1st team coach with a successful track record
