Luca Connell has been released from his Celtic contract.

Signed in 2019 from Bolton to some fanfare the midfielder discovered that there was virtually nothing to assist the development of anyone outside the Celtic first team.

With Scott Brown and Callum McGregor fixtures in the first team Connell’s progress was blocked by Olivier Ntcham, Tom Rogic, Nir Bitton and Ryan Christie. In recent days Kerr McInroy and Ewan Henderson have also left Celtic.

After making a dozen first team appearances for Bolton in the Championship the Irish youth internationalist dropped down to the bottom tier of Scottish football to go out on loan to Queens Park early in 2021.

The Daily Record reports:

Celtic have released highly-rated midfielder Luca Connell after a loan spell at Queen’s Park.

The Premiership champions have decided not to take up his final year option. The 21-year-old is now a free agent and considering his options on both sides of the border.

Celtic paid around £350,000 to take the midfielder from Bolton Wanderers back in 2019.

Lee O’Connor and Jonathan Afolabi were also signed during the summer 2019 transfer window, in contrast Jeremie Frimpong went straight into the first team, 18 months later he was being sold to Bayer Leverkusen for around £10m.

Last summer Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide were signed in similar circumstances, after going out on loan in January it doesn’t look as if their prospects of a breakthrough at Celtic are any stronger.
