Just one first team player- report lays out the bleak transfer reality facing van Bronckhorst

Despite claims of record income, transfer fees and commercial income Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been told that he only has the funds to sign one first team player this summer.

That is the view of Jordan Campbell of the Athletic who has previously had media accreditation at Ibrox. Since straying off message he hasn’t had access to media conferences.

Whether it is Nathan Patterson’s transfer fee, UEFA prize money or any other sort of income it all tends to get overhyped with the manager left to deal with reality. After two windows without being able to pay out more than a token transfer fee Steven Gerrard quit for Aston Villa last autumn.

Re-signing Connor Goldson, Steve Davis and Scott Arfield suggests that turnover will be minimal with Campbell spelling out the reality of the upcoming window in The Athletic

How much money will Van Bronckhorst have to play with, though?

The reality is he does not have a big pot to dip his hands into this summer, but there is understood to be cash to spend on a fee for a key first-team starter, while the Bosman market will again be one they look to find value in to improve the starting XI a la John Lundstram.

A second major transfer fee may require a meaningful sale but Van Bronckhorst was aware that the parameters were tight when he joined in November.

He did not shy away from working within similar constraints at Feyenoord where he blooded young players and that is a big target of sporting director Ross Wilson.

Raising more funds from existing investors is likely to have a limited ceiling so player sales may be the way to ensure they can give Van Bronckhorst the funds to refresh the squad properly.

When it comes to the prospect of trading in order to free up funds, there is a belief from certain figures that they need to put pressure on themselves to play out the model and that may mean Wilson has to be proactive this window in selling top assets.

Rangers will not sell below what they think their players are worth as there are some who could go to the English Premier League and improve most teams, in the bottom half at least. Fetching eight figures and above for any combination of Calvin BasseyGlen Kamara, Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos would free up significant funds, though the timing of their moves in the market may be just as important.

After getting 45 minutes against Borehamwood from Nathan Patterson it’s unlikely that EPL clubs will be chucking money at players with 12 months to run on their contract and two domestic honours to their name.

With barely any mention of the settlement made with Mike Ashley it looks very likely that any profits from the season just ended have gone to Sports Direct following another blunder from former chairman Dave King.
