Celtic are reported to be close to signing free agent Benji Siegrist.

The 30-year-old is available as a free agent after completing four years with Dundee United with Preston and Blackpool recently credited with showing interest.

Siegrist has generally impressed in his performances against Celtic but knows that Joe Hart is the firm first-choice keeper after reviving his career last season as a key player in Ange Postecoglou’s new look side.

At 2.34pm today, The Sun reported:

CELTIC are closing in on the signing of Benji Siegrist. The former Dundee United No1 is a free agent after leaving Tannadice.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou is now set to add the 30-year-old to his goalkeeping ranks for next season.

The Hoops need extra competition for Joe Hart after Vasilis Barkas moved to Utrecht on a season-long loan.

Scott Bain is established as No2 – but Swiss keeper Siegrist could also now be brought in. He spent four years at Tannadice and caught the eye of the Hoops with his consistent form.

If Siegrist is signed it would allow Celtic to send Tobi Oluwayemi out on loan after alternating with Ryan Mullen in last season’s Lowland League squad.

The England u-21 keeper seems to be highly rated but at this stage in his career he needs to be playing first team football at some level otherwise his potential could go the same way as Conor Hazard and Ross Doohan.

Celtic’s non-international players report back to Lennoxtown on June 27 for the start of pre-season training.
