Ange Postecoglou hasn’t closed the door on a move to sign Aaron Mooy.
The midfielder has been freed from his contract in China and is believed to be in Scotland with his Glasgow born wife.
Postecoglou worked with Mooy at international level and knows all about the strengths of the one time St Mirren midfielder.
At the age of 31 Mooy can command very good terms but not many clubs can offer him the guarantee of Champions League football leading into the World Cup Finals in Qatar.
Responding to speculation linking Celtic with Mooy, Postecoglou told The Herald:
Aaron’s a fantastic footballer, somebody I know really well. I guess he’s getting linked with us. I’m sure he will get picked up, he’s a good player, a very talented player.
In terms of us, we have got a plan that we are sticking to and so far I am pretty happy with the progress we are making on all fronts, and hopefully there will be some news coming out in the next couple of weeks before the season starts.
We are going through the process and making sure we get the ones we need. He’s another footballer who is very much talented and very much in my range, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to bring him in, no
After his spell at St Mirren Mooy returned to Australia, moved into the City Football Group and ended up as a £8m Huddersfield signing in 2017, two seasons later he moved to Brighton for £10m.
How sharp his game is after quitting SH Port in China remains to be seen but if an Australian internationalist is club-less in Scotland there is bound to be speculation that Mooy could link up again with his former international boss.
