Mikey Johnston’s move to Standard Liege is now moving according to Voetbal Belgie.

The winger has had a stop-start-stop time over the last two years with regular game time essential if his game is to develop.

With Jota, Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda competing for two places at Celtic there will be limited opportunities for Johnston in the season ahead making a loan spell in Belgium working under Ronny Deila more attractive.

The Belgian league is one of the most competitive in Europe, producing a regular flow of players to the richest leagues in Europe.

Voetbal Belgie reports:

Mikey Johnston has been among the options for Standard in our transfer file for a while. His file is now moving. The 23-year-old left winger is under contract with Celtic Glasgow until mid-2025. Ronny Deila was a trainer at The Bhoys and still maintains good contacts there.

As well as Deila, Celtic have built up strong relations in Belgium with Jack Hendry, Vakoun Bayo, Osaze Urhoghide and Boli Bolingoli all moving in that direction in recent seasons.

Loan transfers often include an option to buy which could be a negotiating issue in any deal for Johnston.
