Jim Goodwin has defended Liam Scales against a recent social media stunt by unknown Aberdeen fans.Â
The defender moved out on loan from Celtic to join the Dons in time for Day One of pre-season training with Aberdeen winning all four League Cup ties to earn a second round trip away to Annan Athletic.Â
Scales has made a favourable impact on the team but apparently a small band of Dons supporters are unhappy over ‘Celtic loans’.Â
Following Ryan Christie and Adam Montgomery, Scales is just the third player to go out on loan from Celtic to Aberdeen with Goodwin happy to explain the benefits of the move to the Daily Record:Â
Listen, Liam Scales is a quality player. I tried to get him on a couple of occasions when I was St Mirren manager and he was over at Shamrock Rovers.Â
He’s a top player and he gives us great balance on that left hand side. He’s the best option available for us right now.Â
We did enquire to Celtic about trying to make it a permanent one, but they prefer to go down the loan route. So, I’m quite comfortable with it. I think the supporters should be too. I think they recognise what Liam has brought to the team so far.
He has been one of our standout performers in this early part (of the season).Â
Since taking over at Aberdeen Goodwin has moved Declan Gallagher on to St Mirren with David Bates, signed last season from SV Hamburg available for sale.Â
Scales won’t be involved in Sunday’s match against Celtic which may serve to remind Aberdeen fans of his importance to Goodwin and their hopes for the season ahead.Â
Don’t worry, it’s an anti Irish thing since they’ve never complained about loan players, even from Celtic, before.
I have to assume that the anti-Celtic banner was done by some of the younger, thicker, Dons fans. They’re obviously too thick to realise that perennial under-achievers like Aberdeen are not attractive propositions for quality players and the only way they’ll get anyone decent is through loans. Unless they can find a sugar daddy of course, but for all the money that has gone through that city over the decades since the oil was found they’ve only ever managed to attract a syrup-loving builder of crap over-priced housing and an absentee landlord I doubt that will happen.
Sometimes I think the Dandies might be as deluded as the scum when it comes to their sense of self-importance.
