After almost a lifetime at Celtic Mikey Johnston will decide in the next week where he will be playing his football in the season ahead.

At the age of 23 the next nine months are critical in his career, the teenage promise has stagnated but in the right environment he could flourish. That environment is unlikely to be in Scotland where the weekend highlighted the brutality that is permitted. Kerr McInroy, a former team-mate of Johnston was very fortunate to escape from Ross County still able to walk.

Hendry is a reporter for Football Scotland.

A variety of factors have hindered Johnston’s development, despite suffering a bad injury in January 2020 there was no sympathy from Neil Lennon as he left the pitch away to St Johnstone. It wasn’t the reaction of a supportive manager but Johnston was back to score in the penalty shoot-out later that year that clinched the Scottish Cup for a fourth successive season.

Moving abroad seems the most beneficial route for Johnston to take but finding the right club is vital. Hearing good things from a coach that could be a month away from being sacked wouldn’t be any use.

Without knowing all the options if Standard Liege are interested working under Ronny Deila would seem a good move. The Norwegian has been away from Celtic for six years but knows the demands that have shaped Johnston’s career to date.

Sead Haksabanovic is about to add further to the competition for places at Celtic, hopefully next summer a revitalised and sharpened Johnston is ready to do the same.

  • Scud Missile says:

This player was always overated and let it get to his head he was better than he was because he played for Celtic just another Tony Watt one good game and he thought he was Messi.
He will end up at Aberdeen or Dundee Utd.

Breaking news David MARTINJAIL to do a zoom call to the ibrox dressing room tonight to shout on wee Scotty and Tav.

  • William Aitkenhead says:

Not sure about a lifetime at Celtic as he joined us from Rangers at U14s

Don’t question his ability, but injuries & inconsistency have been a massive problem. Unfortunately unless he can find a platform where he can play without the cloggers he will continue to struggle

  • Breed the head says:

Don’t rate mj can’t remember in all those years his games against the huns he had a decent game.

  • Charlie Green says:

His whole technique is wrong in that he keeps his head down when dribbling and hasn’t a clue where the goals or his teammates are. I have seen him shoot yards past the goals after beating 3 men. His final ball is always a disappointment and I believe that is the reason. He definitely has talent though…
