A clamour is developing to postpone football matches this weekend with Scottish Ruby and The Juniors announcing that their weekend fixtures have been postponed.

The SPFL, EPL and EFL have got very tight schedules to meet this season to allow for the World Cup Finals but it seems like circumstances will see the weekend football card wiped out- including Celtic’s home match against Livingston.

Hearts continued their Europa Conference fixture with Basaksehir with the death of Queen Elizabeth announced at half-time. Arsenal, Manchester United and West Ham all played evening matches.

The status and length of a mourning period has still to be announced, like many events in recent years there will be an expectation for football to be taking a lead role while other aspects of society continue as normal.

There are UEFA fixtures in all three completions over Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week with Celtic in Warsaw to take on Shakhtar Donetsk.

Depending on the funeral date fixtures next weekend could be in doubt with Celtic away to St Mirren on September 18.

Wouldn’t be very inclusive if fixtures are postponed?

Even if you are not a Royalist – even if you find the whole idea of a monarchy absolutely offensive in this day and age – your leisure time is impacted regardless.

If you are a Royalist, you could simply choose not to e.g. go the footy, the theatre, etc. this weekend as a mark of respect.

Our pathetic SFA/SPFL will no doubt postpone. 🙁

I’m no royalist Bob ,but the queen has been a stalwart in my life and everyone else’s life who is 6 or more ,I just felt a tinge of sadness ,I’m not by anyway a royalist but she has been a fixture in all of our lives ,love her or loathe her,I’m a proud Celtic fan but I feel a certain sadness about today’s news.

Jim Dufy, a ‘ Stalwart’ is someone who stands by you.
WTF has she or any of her brood and hangers on done for you or any average person in this County. Zilch.
They detest us at worst and patronise us at best. We are their ‘Subjects’, not even citizens in our own Country.
They have no empathy for us, or remorse or embarrassment for their dismissal of us as irrelevancies.
Its a shame when anyone dies but that’s life. Mourning by friends and family is to be respected.
However this faux Public outpouring of grief and anguish is sickening. The Whole of the UK has got to stop to allow for a period of National mourning where an outrageous amount of Public Money will be spent to allow the Establishment figures and ‘ Celebrities’ to parade for the International Press while in the same four countries old people will die alone, neglected by society. The poor will still be poor. Children will still go hungry in the 5th or 6th richest country on the Planet.
But it’s OK she and her ilk are Stalwarts.
        I give up.

Utterly ridiculous! Life should not stop. People can show respect if the want to without this.
    Respect is earned not demanded.

  • Pan says:

Absolutely agree Bob (original), but that would appear to be too sensible.

never been interested in the royal family .

  • the maister says:

A funeral is good enough! Fair enough! Never forget what the British State did to the Irish, right up to the present day!

  • Stevie says:

For or against. This is someones Mother,Grandmother and family member. Some people need to get a grip. God help you if one of your own passes and you have to make the funeral arrangements.(Oh sorry can’t do that date, the football is on)
If footy goes ahead obviously there will be a minute silence. Don’t fall into the trap that everyone will expect. Respect the silence and move on.
