David Edgar’s glass was half full as he watched his side lose for the third match running as Napoli made it a 0-11 aggregate for the mournful month of September.
It is pretty desperate stuff when you are trying to salvage positives from a 3-0 home defeat from a Pot 3 team but Edgar does seem to recognise that the Champions League is the real deal compared to the Thursday night stuff he has been enjoying in recent seasons.
Last night the team showed some spirit and fight, they looked interested and went in on level terms at the break rather than trailing 0-3.
As he went through each area of the team there was nothing to be positive about, basically Giovanni van Bronckhorst recalled the old guard of McGregor, Davis, Jack, Morelos and Arfield who know about damage limitations.
Tellingly none of the Magnificent Seven summer signings were in from the start with supporters speculating that all might not be sweetness and light between the manager and Transfer Guru Ross Wilson.
There are still some issues, the defence are looking a little patchwork. We had a back three tonight of Goldson, Sands and Lundstrum, that is two midfielders in there, and when we did make a substitution after the red card it was Leon King who came on, not Ben Davies.
So that is an issue, none of the new players started tonight which is a concern and although I thought that the midfield played well tonight- Jack, Davis and Arfield, who was my man-of-the-match, I thought he was excellent- that isn’t a long term solution. Issues are still there.
There is some good news on the injury front with John Souttar expected to start light training in 7/10 days.
