A year ago Giorgos Giakoumakis was in-between his first Celtic goal and a penalty miss against Livingston that cost the club two points.

Stung by a long, often miserable list of failed strikers Celtic fans were far from convinced that the striker from VVV Venlo could break the mould.

Vakoun Bayo and Patryk Klimala were the most recent failures with that list stretching back to Mo Bangura and Teemu Pukki.

Last night Giakoumakis transferred his goal touch into the Champions League and although Celtic had to settle for a draw it was a significant goal for the striker.

Big George, as Chris Sutton refers to him, has always been behind Kyogo Furuhashi when the bigger matches come around but this month he has looked the more reliable and likely option.

Away to St Johnstone he saved the day with a stoppage time winner, at Tynecastle he turned the tide as Hearts thought they were on course for a shock.

Giakoumakis seems to take it as a personal insult if he doesn’t score- with that sort of attitude he looks on course for another crack at the Champions League next season.
