After grilling Ange Postecoglou on the failings of Scottish football BBC Scotland’s big hitters opted out of today’s media conference with Giovanni van Bronckhorst from Murray Park.

On Friday Al Lamont, from the state broadcaster, effectively asked Ange Postecoglou if there was any point to playing in European competition.

After his initial reaction of astonishment the Celtic boss explained to Lamont that he doesn’t answer for other clubs and that anyone questioning Celtic’s participation must have an agenda or bias. Anyone familiar with Lamont knows the answers to those claims.

Ronnie Esplin of Press Association, Derek Clark of Rangers Review and Lindsay Herron of Express/Reach asked van Bronckhorst questions this morning before Martin Dowden of the BBC tentatively asked about the process of reviewing the Champions League record defeat from Liverpool.

Someone from STV,  then asked if he could compare losing 7-1 to Liverpool with the 5-1 defeat to Dr Jo in 1998 with the treble finishing up at Ibrox at the end of the season!

Martin who? He probably got the short straw on Friday night, perhaps some of his 1,000 Twitter followers might know who he is. Dowden was nowhere near Radio Scotland’s coverage of the match on Wednesday night.

Hard-hitting anchor man Kenny Macintyre was in the lead role with Tom English, Steven Thompson and Neil McCann searching for silver linings. At half-time Thommo told listeners that Liverpool were there for the taking.

It seems that the grief felt by Macintyre, English and Lamont from Wednesday night was still too overwhelming for any of them to ask van Bronckhorst a question three days later.

This afternoon the big noises from the state broadcaster will be on air, lumping all of the Scottish clubs together as they avoid speculating about a pointless Champions League campaign with a world record goal difference.

Dowden won’t be part of the BBC Scotland team flying to Naples for Matchday Five in the Champions League.
