Liam McLeod had two feasible options over his Wednesday night comments as he tried to airbrush over Celtic’s 7-1 victory over Rangers in the 1957 League Cup Final.

The BBC Scotland reporter could have ignored his comments or admitted that he had mistakenly overlooked one of the most significant post-war results in Scottish football history.

As the voice that has bored radio listeners for years by reeling off pointless and obscure statistics as part of his ‘commentating style’ claiming to have overlooked the scoreline in a national cup final would be difficult to pull off.

Last night, ahead of Hearts getting hammered in Italy, McLeod revisited the issue and sounded as convincing as a Tory MP backing the policies of their PM.

Bluntly put McLeod was at it.

We were talking about record defeats on the programme last night. Not being from Glasgow and having the League cup final of 1957 at the forefront of my mind, Rangers of course equalling their record defeat of 7-1 to Liverpool.

Not being from Glasgow McLeod knew of two six goal beatings from Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960 and another from Real Madrid three years later.

Not being from Glasgow he knows what foot his bosses kick with and how to stay onside for his geekish commentaries. In his Linkedin bio the ‘Aberdeen’ fan claims ‘An experienced, professional broadcaster, I have worked in the industry for the majority of the last 20 years and for the BBC in Glasgow for 16.’

In 2000 Martin O’Neill’s side also put six past the old Rangers club, just two years before McLeod moved to Glasgow, perhaps he hasn’t heard of that Demolition Derby either.

Celtic fans were happy to set the record straight with the man paid directly from TV Licence fees. Both Ibrox clubs have lost high profile matches 7-1.
