Barry Ferguson believes that Giovanni van Bronckhorst needs more than just another turgid, laboured win against Aberdeen tomorrow.

Jim Goodwin’s side visit Ibrox tomorrow hoping to pile on the agony for the under fire boss knowing that the angry bears have booed their team off the park in their last two matches.

A 1-0 win over Dundee in the League Cup was followed by a 1-1 draw at home to Livingston summed up their season to date with patience running out among fans.

Hailing a 3-0 defeat to Napoli B as an improvement and a show of character shows how desperate the manager has become following six defeats in less than two months.

Ferguson hasn’t yet given up on his old team-mate but wants to see a full blooded win tomorrow to turn the season around and silence the boo boys in the stand.

Speaking to the Daily Record the former Alloa boss said:

For once, I’m not sure a win will be enough to get the supporters back onside. No, Gio needs something bigger and better than just another grind. He needs a full blooded, high tempo, passion-fuelled 90 minute long performance.

He needs to reconnect with a support which has run out of patience waiting for this team and its manager to catch fire. And, most of all, he needs to prove that this football club matters as much to the players as it does to the fans.

I’ve been there during the tough times, when it feels as if nothing is going your way. And right now I see a group of players who are really suffering and running low on confidence. They don’t even look as if they are enjoying themselves out there.

But I also know these things can be turned around with just one really strong, all guns blazing performance. It’s amazing what one good game can do to lift your self esteem. And I can hardly think of a better one than Aberdeen at home.

If Celtic extend their four point lead at the top of the Premiership table before the World Cup break Ferguson could find himself as a contender for the new look management team at Ibrox.
