Tom English has painted a glowing picture of life at Ibrox, claiming that the company is now edging towards self-sufficiency.

In 2011 and 2012 the man from BBC Scotland was the last reporter backing Craig Whyte, standing by the former billionaire even after the Daily Record had sussed out their one time hero.

With BBC Scotland back inside the media tent all of their output has an artificial glow to matters Ibrox related. When UEFA put the club’s finances on their ‘watch list’ the state broadcaster side stepped that story.

English and his Glasgow based colleagues went to incredible lengths to win back their press privileges, his claims about the Nathan Patterson transfer fee and self sufficiency will soon be shown up when the accounts are released.

A pay off to Sports Direct and repaying Dave King £5m plus interest will have to be recorded while the BBC whip up the gullible into believing that all is well in the Blue Room. Seems like no one at the state broadcaster has noted the recent interviews by Stewart Robertson and John Bennett warning that there is very little money inside the club.

Painting his picture on the BBC website ahead of tonight’s match English claims:

A distance of 220 miles separates Ibrox from Anfield, but Rangers have been on a far greater journey than that over the past few years. Nobody should lose sight of where this club has come from, a financial basket-case, a team routinely humiliated by its nearest rivals, a succession of owners and directors that damaged the club and enraged the fans. For a long time they were mired in darkness.

Steven Gerrard won a league, Giovanni van Bronckhorst a cup, almost the Europa League, and has taken them into the Champions League. Where before they had no player trading model, they now have one, with Nathan Patterson, Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey exiting for significant money. After a decade of multi-million pound operating losses they are now inching towards self-sufficiency.

That’s the biggest victory they have won, the victory over the chaos that brought the place to its knees. Being Rangers, though, more is always demanded.

A word beginning with L and ending in iquidation seems to be out of commission with the state broadcaster.

English will be providing radio coverage of tonight’s match alongside Kenny Macintyre, Steven Thompson, Neil McCann, Alasdair Lamont, Jane Lewis and Kenny Miller.
