Watch Nick Walsh’s double standards over VAR penalty claims

After nine days in operation the inconsistencies of VAR are obvious for all to see- allowing match officials extra time to judge similar incidents entirely differently.

Last week Nick Walsh watched Michael Smith lift his hand to divert a pass from James Forrest into the Hearts box, players from both teams expected a penalty to be awarded.

Walsh hesitated, consulted with VAR Steven McLean then play continued without taking a look at the pitchside monitor. Two minutes earlier he had checked the monitor before awarding a penalty to Hearts.

7 minutes 55 seconds for penalty incident

There was a very similar incident at Ibrox today with the homeside leading 3-1. Aberdeen’s Jayden Richardson took an awkward touch on his thigh with the ball bouncing up off his arm, fairly similar to Smith last week at Tynecastle.

Walsh was again well positioned to view the incident, Willie Collum on VAR duty suggested that he take a look at the monitor with a penalty awarded. And missed.

Steven McLean should have been the referee at today’s match but pulled out for some reason allowing Walsh to referee the Ibrox side for the fourth time in their 12 SPFL matches.

On Monday Walsh will be back at his day job as a PE teacher to Murray Park starlets at Boclair Academy.

Fourth gam! He will feel right at home there, then. And up at EBT Park during the week as well! Just get the guy an office, with an armchair and a box of big cigars in case he gets some time off!
