Joey Barton has called out James Tavernier as he prepares for the arrival of the fifth permanent manager of his time at Ibrox. The former Wigan ace has also had two stints under caretaker boss Graeme Murty.

The former Burnley star had a brief spell at Ibrox in 2016, arriving to all of the usual hype the disappearing quickly after an anonymous display in a six goal thriller at Celtic Park.

The side built by Mark Warburton was quickly dismantled by Pedro Caixinha and Steven Gerrard but with a total of two winners medals from 20 domestic competitions Tav has managed to outlast them all.

Picking up on a podcast, The Sun reports Barton saying:

I’m still watching the same players I was criticising when I was in the building make the same mistakes, which is probably going to get the manager now, Gio van Bronckhorst the heave-ho relatively soon.

Certain people, who are meant to be defenders, can’t defend, and nobody’s done any work on them since.

Tavernier is the only survivor from Barton’s five appearances in the SPFL. Earlier this season the 31-year-old signed a contract extension for an undisclosed period of time.
