Ange Postecoglou isn’t losing any sleep about the speculation surrounding Giorgos Giakoumakis.
Following a report that talks over a new deal had broken down it was claimed that the striker had switched agent followed by a vague claim of interest from Saudi Arabia.
All the while Giakoumakis has been training with Celtic in Portugal and at Lennoxtown, preparing for the SPFL season resuming at Aberdeen tomorrow.
With the transfer window opening up in under a fortnight, speculation is only going to increase despite the striker being under contract until May 2026.
Responding to speculation about Giakoumakis, The Herald reports the Celtic boss saying:
What I deal with is what I see every day. He’s here, he’s training well, he’s contributing and I’m not really sure of anything beyond that. It’s not really on my radar.
Despite those comments Postecpoglou will be well aware that at the age of 28 now is the best time for the former VVV Venlo to grab the sort of contract that he couldn’t have dreamt of a year or two ago.
With more than three years remaining on his contract Celtic holds the upper hand but further developments are likely before the end of January.
Other thigs accrue over time other than money. e.g. Winning back to back Championships, another crack at UCL. You can’t buy that experience!
Plus, if he does well or gets better where he is, then he should at least be in the reckoning for a contract extension.
I like the big guy. He is honest, which is a quality that is by no means present universally!
