Steve Davis won’t play again this season after suffering a knee injury in training.

The midfielder will turn 38 on January 1, with his contract expiring at the end of this season it could mean the end of his playing career.

Davis has started three SPFL matches and appeared five times off the bench with his last described as a Rolls Royce show against Hibs in the recent 3-2 victory.

Earlier in the season Giovanni van Bronckhorst suffered a bad run of injuries with John Souttar, Tom Lawrence and Ridvan Yilmaz joining Kemar Roofe, Filip Helander and Ianis Hagi in the treatment room.

It was assumed that the revolutionary training sessions of Micky Beale would resolve that but with Davis out for at least five months there are also concerns over the fitness of Antonio Colak.

Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara, John Lundstram and Scott Arfield provide midfield alternatives to Davis. Souttar is expected to resume light training in the next 7-10 days.
