Yuki Kobayashi is closing in on his Celtic debut.

The defender’s move to Celtic was announced in November with a place on the Portuguese training camp helping him to adapt to the Scottish game and the way that Ange Postecoglou wants to see the game played.

Kobayashi has been on the bench for Celtic’s last three matches but is still waiting for his first minutes as a Celtic player.

Carl Starfelt has re-established his partnership with Cameron Carter-Vickers in central defence with that area of the team one that Postecoglou is loathe to rotate in.

With three regular Japanese starters in the Celtic side Kobayashi could be given some time against St Mirren on Wednesday night as the Celtic boss revealed to The Sun.

Discussing his January signings, Postecoglou said:

Tomoki (Iwants) probably not yet, he only really joined us in the last week and he has missed a bit.

Yuki (Kobayashi) is close, he came to us having started a pre-season camp, so he’s had a good three or four weeks of training.

He obviously lacks some game-time. And we will probably give him some of that through the next couple of fixtures, with the quick turnaround from midweek to Saturday.

Yuki’s definitely close, but for Tomoki, it will probably be another week or so before he’s in a condition to be given an opportunity.

On Saturday Celtic are at home to Morton in the Scottish Cup followed eight days later by a trip to face Dundee United in the SPFL.
