Celtic have agreed terms with Atlanta United for the transfer of Giorgos Giakoumakis according to a report from Greece.

SDNA has provided some fairly reliable information on the protracted departure of the striker which appears to have come down to a choice between Urawa Red Diamonds and Atlanta United.

The J-League side were first to agree terms with Celtic but after undergoing their medical in Amsterdam is appears that the American side have gazumped them with just a few details to be tidied up before the move is announced.

Tonight SDNA report:

According to information from SDNA, Celtic have accepted the proposal of Atlanta United for the acquisition of Giorgos Giakoumakis with the Greek forward preparing for the trip to the other side of the Atlantic!

As SDNA first wrote, the 28-year-old forward had agreed to continue his career at Atlanta United, however the deal initially did not go ahead, since the MLS club wanted a loan and not an immediate transfer of the former Eredivisie top scorer.

At the same time, Celtic had found everything with Urava Red Diamonds, with the Japanese offering 3.5 million euros for the acquisition of the Heraklion forward!

Atlanta, however, at the last moment made the “checkmate” move, managing to unlock a “Designated Player” position on behalf of Giorgos Giakoumakis.

Each team in the American league has the right to exceed the salary cap for only three of its players in order to make the transfer. Atlanta’s new proposal was extremely tempting offering 3.8 million euros plus 900,000 euros from participation bonuses, goals, etc.

The specific offer was accepted by Angelos Postecoglou’s team and now the former AEK player is counting down to the official announcement of the transfer.

After alternating with Kyogo Furuhashi in the first part of the season Giakoumakis was left on the bench for Celtic’s first seven matches after the World Cup break.

The Greek internationalist has been missing from Celtic’s last three fixtures with new signing Oh Hyeon-gyu making his debut as a substitute yesterday away to Dundee United.
