Sheffield Wednesday are reported to have made an enquiry about taking Stephen Welsh on loan for the remainder of the season.

The defender has had an injury hit season which combined with the arrivals of Moritz Jenz and Yuki Kobayashi has restricted him to just six appearances.

One of them was in the Champions League away to RB Leipzig where he was one of the few players to earn pass marks.

Game time would certainly benefit Welsh but if he was to move out it would leave the untried duo of Kobayashi and Bosun Lawal as back up to Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt.

Tonight Football Scotland revealed:

Sheffield Wednesday have enquired about Celtic’s Stephen Welsh with a loan move broached ahead of the deadline.

The defender has only featured six times this season and is behind the likes of regulars Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt in the pecking order. The 22-year-old has also found new signing Yuki Kobayashi in front of him when Ange Postecoglou picks his squads following an injury battle.

That has now alerted the Owls to his potential availability and Football Scotland understands they have been in touch to gauge Celtic’s willingness to sanction a six-month deal until the end of the season.

We also understand it’s likely to be a late dash to get the deal over the line if Celts green-light it. Welsh would likely benefit from minutes under his belt in England’s League One as they attempt to battle at the top of the table for the crown and promotion to the Championship.

Porto and Udinese have both been linked with an interest in Welsh who turned 23 earlier this month.

Any encouragement from Celtic could alert other English clubs to the availability of the defender but with just over 24 hours left in the transfer window time is getting tight to get a deal pushed through.

Ange Postecoglou is expected to give a media conference at lunchtime tomorrow to preview Wednesday’s match at home to Livingston.

Stephen Welsh as I suggested on another post is a victim of our mad pyramid system. As a way to promote youth football it has its merits, however, in the program for promoting youth to senior it lacks big time. The only allowed to play so many games (5) in first team then not allowed in B? Time to resurrect the old Reserve League. With other teams, Hearts wanting in it makes sense. So, let’s see, overrule the Sevconians and reinstall the Reserve League, then the B team can feed the Reserve and so forth.

Hearts wanting B team into Lowland League is my point. If they can provide a reserve team then resurrect the Reserve League.
