Celtic are reported to have rejected an offer from Newport County to take Joey Dawson on loan.

The striker was signed from Scunthorpe in the summer of 2021 to beef up the Celtic B squad that was about to enter the Lowland League.

On 26 December 2021 he found himself thrown on for his only first team appearance away to St Johnstone when Ange Postecoglou’s squad was hit by self-isolation restrictions.

Dawson has been in scoring form recently for the Celtic B team but it seems that he is needed for the Lowland League rather than a toughening up period in League Two.

At 19.29 on their Transfer Blog Football Scotland reported:

Celtic have rejected a loan offer from Newport County for striker Joey Dawson, Football Scotland understands.

The youngster, 19, was wanted by the League Two club who hoped to strengthen their attack for the final six months of the season. However we understand the Hoops do not want to sanction a loan for the player.

Celtic B are flying in the Lowland League and the club don’t want to lose Dawson as he continues to score goals for Darren O’Dea’s side.

We told you previously how Inverness CT were also hopeful of a loan switch for Dawson.

The teenager scored in Saturday’s 2-2 draw away to East Kilbride but with no meaningful prize on offer in the Lowland League getting some experience in League Two would appear to be a decent step up.

Celtic B face University of Stirling, Boness United and Gretna 2008 in their next three matches, in League Two Newport have matches against Barrow, Stevenage and Wallsall.

In truth Joe, loosing a youth/B team player is becoming all to familiar. Whether it’s loans or straight move the system in the Scottish youth, B team is a farce. We know that when Sevco could not compete in reserves, it was abandoned. So if “Billy big baws” now think that their up with the pace then let’s restart the reserve team system. Could be a game changer in youth player retention.

    Thoughts Joe?
