Last night on Football Extra on BT Sport Ally McCoist went into a rant about Alastair Johnston, welcoming him to the Paranoia Club.

Questioning some of the unique ways of Scottish football seems to have jarred a raw nerve.

The comments from the former Sunderland striker were verging on hysterical. While some like to paint him as a fun loving pundit everything he says is for a reason, usually to boost his bank balance.

Anyone doubting his motives should check out his resignation as Sevco manager which triggered a bumper pay rise on his contract as he took up 12 months on gardening leave.

McCoist famously claimed that he didn’t need to look at the contract he was offered to become Rangers manager in 2011. If the price is right Craig Whyte, Charles Green or whoever is writing the cheques can count on Coisty’s sound-bites.

Feeding into the paranoia of Rangers fans who believe that sinister conspiracies put their club into administration and liquidation has proved very lucrative for McCoist.

In April 2012 with Rangers in administration a three man panel appointed by the SFA applied a registration ban on the club, a pointless punishment.

Playing to the paranoia of their fans McCoist told the Daily Record:

Plain and simply, I think it is an absolutely shocking decision. I found out last night and I was shocked and absolutely appalled by the way this supposedly independent judicial panel was coming down on us in this form.

Who are these people? I want to know who these people are. I’m a Rangers supporter and the Rangers supporters and the Scottish public deserve to know who these people are, people who are working for the SFA.

Make no mistake about it, this is an SFA decision. They have appointed the panel so therefore they are working for the SFA, but who are they?

I think we have a right to know who is handing out this punishment to us, I really do. Like everyone else involved – our team, our supporters, our staff and a lot of neutrals – I’m staggered at the severity of the punishment.

This decision could kill our football club, simple as that. Make no mistake about it. This panel is not totally to blame for the death of our football club if it happens but this particular decision could kill our football club.

Ibrox director Andrew Dickson had attended the week long hearing, he knew the three people that made up the panel. Once their names were released, including a Raith Rovers director, the Fife club had to pay for 24 hour security after threats were made to burn their stadium down.

Unfortunately the club did die just two months later when Her Majesty refused a CVA, luckily for McCoist he TUPEd his contract over to The Tribute Act while Kyle Lafferty, Steven Whittaker, Allan McGregor, Steven Naismith and others walked away.

A year later, following an arson attack on a coach at Bruce’s of Salsburgh, McCoist told the Daily Record:

It saddens me. It really does. I think it’s pathetic that people would go to these extremes.

It sounds like a premeditated attack on Rangers’ bus and I’m gutted about it but thankfully nobody’s been killed.

Unfortunately arson attacks aren’t uncommon in the transport industry but McCoist had got his message out.

How should Celtic deal with the SFA over VAR?

It’s a good job for sevco that when the bus got torched Dougie 55chins Park was coming back as a director and could provide the new club with Transport……just saying like!

  • Bob (original) says:

Remember when a lot of us thought McCoist “was alright”?
He duped us all for years – right up until 2012.

As for: “…I’m staggered at the severity of the punishment.”
Many more were staggered at the leniency of the punishment.

Any club which had deliberately cheated ALL 41 fellow SPL/SFL clubs,
over a 10+ year period by fielding ineligible players,
would have been unceremoniously kicked out of the league.

No questions asked and no appeals.
That’s what any normal governing sports body would have done.

  • John Copeland says:

What super swally is intimating is that everything about the Rangers is as clean as newly fallen snow ! Also that everyone ever associated with the clumpany is an angel with big thick wings …. We are not worthy…
