Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Celtic have agreed a €4m package to sell Giorgos Giakoumakis to Urawa Red Diamonds of the J-League.

Celtic fans may be grudgingly coming to terms with the likely departure of the striker but that price seems to be of little benefit to the club. Last summer Watford paid £5m to sign former Celtic flop Vakoun Bayo from Gent.

There has been speculation over the future of Giakoumakis since the end of November when news emerged about a breakdown in talks over a new contract.

Since the restart of the season Giakoumakis has started every match on the substitute bench, on Saturday at Hampden he replaced Kyogo Furuhashi for the final 25 minutes and scored the stoppage time goal that secured Celtic’s final place.

If the deal is completed the hunt will be on for a replacement striker, while Daizen Maeda, Liel Abada and Sead Haksabanovic can play through the centre all three prefer to play in wide positions.

Ange Postecoglou will speak to the media on Tuesday afternoon to preview the match with St Mirren and is likely to be asked about transfer business.

Ange has lost the plot. Why would a decent striker come knowing he is replacing GG on the bench. £4million!

  • John S says:

Check out the price tags of bang-average English Championship players, going for five times that, easily.

It’s all absolutely farcical. The ITKs cannot get a rumour straight. GG was supposed to be having a medical, yet comes on to play in a Semi Final. As I will continue to say, until Ange says the rumour is 90%correct- as opposed to the 90% wrong – he stated, then all we can do is continue to watch our best players playing their best for us.

Why are celtic accepting such a low fee for a young player and a great goal scorer?
