Self pitying and spiteful irrationalism- Keith Jackson accuses Ange Postecoglou

Friday’s media conference by Ange Postecoglou has certainly upset a number of reporters.

On Sunday Gary Keown of the Daily Mail feared that it was a sign that the Celtic boss had gone ‘doo-lally’, today Keith Jackson of the Daily Record throws some serious claims at the Celtic boss including spiteful irrationalism.

It seems that issue could be turned on Jackson as he falls back on claims of paranoia rather than examine some facts or comparisons.

This season Celtic have had five penalties awarded against them in the SPFL, the team in second place haven’t had a penalty awarded against them in 21 matches.

Among those stats are the ridiculous decisions given against Alexandro Bernabei and Matt O’Riley, contrasting sharply with the decisions of John Beaton and Willie Collum at Ibrox last week.

In his Monday column, Jackson writes:

There are two ways of interpreting Ange Postecoglou’s sudden outpouring of VAR related prickliness. And after all the colour and positives he has brought to our game over the last 18 months, perhaps this relative newcomer deserves to be cut a bit of slack where this uncharacteristic bout of self pitying is concerned.

Yes, on Friday, when the normally laid back big Aussie began bumping his gums over some of the refereeing decisions made at Ibrox a week ago, it did all feel like a horribly familiar blast from the not too distant past. For a moment, he could have been borrowing Tom Boyd’s tinfoil hat. But indulging in spiteful irrationalism just doesn’t seem like Postecoglou’s style.

In particular, Celtic’s manager has found it impossible to fathom why his side were not awarded a penalty kick when Connor Goldson batted away Carl Starfelt’s shot with two hands inside his own box in what was deemed by John Beaton and Willie Collum to be a natural, reflex action. And, yes, the old ‘it wouldn’t have happened at the other end of the pitch’ stuff played perfectly into the well worn narrative of Celtic’s deep rooted distrust of authority.

How should Celtic deal with the SFA over VAR?

Postecoglou made no comment about ‘it wouldn’t have happened at the other end of the pitch’. If Jackson watched the conference or read the Daily Record he’d have picked up on:

We can say it just comes down to interpretation or whatever people want to say, but I guarantee you if that game finished 2-2 and Rangers were denied that decision, the talk this week would be about how that was a title-defining decision.

His comment was on media reaction, not the decision making.

The Daily Record is invited in to every newspaper conference held by Celtic, in June 2020, in what turned out to be his last newspaper interview as CEO, Peter Lawwell told Jackson of his expectation to have supporters inside Celtic Park at test matches the following month. No fans attended matches at Celtic Park until July 2021.

Just another bit of negative press coverage from LIEWELL favourite what is known as a journalist.

This is LIEWELL behind this article to get Jackass Jackson the BOOZE jockey to upset big Ange to make way for another BOOZE jockey Lennon to ease his way back in the door.

I’m telling you all just now Lennon will be invited to a game at Parkhead before the season is out as guest of LIEWELL.

This has all the hallmarks of a Gio Fanny scenario with Ian Beale written all over.

  • Scud Missile says:

And then they ask themselves why none of our refs are invited to ref at the big tournaments, while country’s from the back of beyond have refs at the same tournaments denied to our refs.

  • Tam says:

We are supposed to have a free press in this country does MR Jackson’s rag pay £25,000 to “the rangers” to gain access to the “press” conference……. NOT very free to me…or maybe their still….. banned

Editor: There is no free press. Publishers produce content to attract and retain an audience that makes them attractive to advertisers. We know the audience that the Record is looking for #offtheradar

  • Pan says:

Jackass is a troublemaker and I think he is also biased in his comments. He is one of the most irrational people around as we note from his comments, so how can he possibly comment on rationality? Seems irrational to me!

  • Geoff mc guire says:

Give us woman referee’s they are more honest, and especially english, ones they dont care who in Scotland wins,i wonder who’s head this comment will rattle.

    • Michael Collins says:

What about the woman ref at the game against Real Madrid? Was she honest? Were the two penalties she gave against us stonewallers?

  • Harold Shand says:

Just a p*ss head who writes guff like this when he’s half cut

  • John Copeland says:

Memo to Jackson ! Let Ange orate his expert opinion on football matters ,while Jackson can salivate over which grape is grown in which vine region of the continent .,.

  • Michael Chalmers says:

Goldson has had at least 6 different hand balls in his favour so wtf is a hand ball penalty if its non of them wtf is it

  • Sean McGinley says:

I can’t believe a Celtic supporter even reads him or his rags and assoc. rags…let alone quoting him and giving him the attention he seeks, negative though it may seem. Just another twisted D.O.B.
    BHOYCOTT the scottish press.
