Chris Sutton has warned Micky Beale that he is playing a dangerous game if he thinks that he can spook Ange Postecoglou with mind games.
Being lucky isn’t seen by many as a compliment in a cut-throat business, very very few managers land lucky, especially not when you inherit a squad that is being decimated after the worst season in 20 years.
With Scott Brown off to Aberdeen Postecoglou had to find a skipper, try to get a tune out of disastrous signings by the previous regime and cope with Ryan Christie, Olivier Ntcham, Odsonne Edouard and Kris Ajer wanting away as they entered the final months of their contracts.
Throw in a fixture list that included trips to Tynecastle and Ibrox in the first month and you’ll see why few people were describing Postecoglou as lucky when he took over as manager.
Managers are normally protective and respective of their peers but in his first season in the spotlight Beale has had a bit too much to say as Sutton explains in the Daily Record:
Whether that lucky jibe from Beale was an attempt to belittle Postecoglou’s achievements as a coach or rattle him and Celtic, it smacked of a real lack of class.
Within the game, I think many managers will have raised eyebrows at Beale’s lack of self awareness, especially after the way he left QPR.
And, for me, there’s also just something about the way he talks about the last Rangers title triumph, almost a perception that he was front and centre of that success. Wasn’t Steven Gerrard the actual manager? The one in the firing line? Yes Postecoglou has the resource, but he’s worked at it. He’s a club builder and has had success in different countries over 25 years in management by doing so.
He had to build Celtic up because the club was on the decline when he arrived and the squad was not good enough. He went straight into Champions League qualifiers using kids. He lost three of his first six Premiership games. He’s had to build what he’s now got. Top coaches, managers and observers respect that.
Beale’s early results should be doing their own talking but it seems that the new Ibrox boss can’t resist being in the spotlight.
His sharp departure from QPR after broadcasting about loyalty has acted as a red flag to other English clubs. If he fails to deliver instant success at Ibrox he will have to start explaining for himself.

Beale’s “lucky” comment was ill advised, but he would have felt comfortable knowing that the SMSM – generally – would not call him out, [Sutton excepted.]
Suppose it was a useful distraction from his lack of transfers-in?
But, it could be that Beale tries to go full-on with his Sir Alex / Mourinho / Wenger mind games, [the Poundland version of course], in the run up to the LC Final on the 26th?
This Final could make or break sevco’s season – and maybe also Beale’s reputation amongst the hard to please bears?
Unless sevco suddenly find their form before this game, Beale could be coming out with all sorts of nonsense about Ange / CFC players before the Final.
