Police Scotland have stepped in while the football authorities back off from last night’s shameful incident during the SWPL Glasgow derby at Broadwood.

The match had produced an entertaining 1-1 draw but it was an incident after the final whistle that dominated the aftermath.

At 10.53 this morning Football Scotland reported:

Police Scotland have launched a probe following the altercation and revealed they have received a report over the incident at full-time.

A spokesperson for the force confirmed: “We have received a report regarding an incident at Broadwood Stadium on the evening of Monday, 27 March, 2023. Enquiries to establish any criminality are at an early stage.”

At 11am this morning there had still been no comment from the SFA or SWPL over the head-butting incident in last night’s Glasgow Derby that disgraced Scottish football.

Envious of the content put out for the woman’s game in England it was quite an achievement for the SWPL to get Sky Sports along to Broadwood to cover last night’s match.

Ian Crocker has been commentating on Scottish football for more than 20 years but it is unlikely that he has ever seen an incident of one coach physically attacking another.

There has been shouting matches, stand-offs and in England some bother over handshakes but last night Craig McPherson head-butted Celtic coach Fran Alonso after the final whistle.

After the match boss coaches were asked about the incident by Sky Sports, it dominated their post match coverage and appeared regularly on Sky Sports News.

With attention on the Scottish game it seems that the authorities and McPherson’s club are reluctant to take any action.

A simple statement about an enquiry would be enough, McPherson could be suspended by his club to buy time but it appears that other issues are more important.

Throughout today Ian Maxwell of the SFA will be in the company of the Spanish FA and UEFA delegates- he’ll be hoping that none of them tune in to Sky Sports News or look to see what is trending on social media.
