Image for The Sun breaks the SPFL Premiership penalty taboo

While Andy Walker and Sky Sports pour over the penalty awarded to Celtic for handball by Alex Iacovitti on Sunday The Sun has ventured off into a subject rarely discussed.

The image is generally put out that every club has suffered from VAR decisions with a flood of penalties being awarded, almost all for handball.

One club has managed to avoid the issue, the introduction of VAR has left them unaffected with Goldson’s Law brought into play.

Around the turn of the year the apologists were performing gymnastics with the Laws of the Game as they justified why various acts of handball didn’t actually merit the award of a penalty.

Not only has the Ibrox club not had a penalty awarded against them this season but the run extends back to January 2022 covering 49 matches, in Europe this season four penalties were awarded against them in 10 matches.

In 31 SPFL matches this season Celtic have lost 21 goals with a third of them coming from the penalty spot. Ross County have been awarded one penalty all season- away from home against the SPFL leaders.

Some are under the illusion that an inadvertent handball inside the box is not a penalty. The real problem with VAR is the selection of the officials who are appointed.
