For the former STV reporter joining Sky Sports must have been about the bright lights of the EPL, being part of the massive occasions at Old Trafford, Anfield, Highbury and Stamford Bridge.
Interviewing Ryan Giggs, Teddy Sheringham, Robbie Fowler or Tony Adams, grabbing a picture and kidding on that you are mates with the stars.
Unfortunately things have never quite worked out the way that David Autocue Tanner had hoped, one step forward was followed by two steps back with the highlight being trapped in a studio for years with wee Neil ‘Terry’ McCann.

The Li’l Ze twitter account has managed to dig up a classic broadcasting moment that Tanner probably felt had been buried out of sight, never to resurface while he is out on the bowling club circuit with Tam Cowan sharing pure working class banter for a few scoops.
It looks like it was at Celtic’s 2001 or 2002 SPL presentation day when the fresh faced Sky Sports reporter was presented with his worst case scenario.
Apart from watching his club go from administration to liquidation it doesn’t get much worse for a True Blue than to be pitched into the centre circle at Celtic Park on a sunny afternoon as the SPL trophy is being handed over with 60,000 fans singing The Fields of Athenry.
Sutton decided to make it worse, much much worse with three of the driest answers ever given as Tanner’s fake enthusiasm for Celtic’s success was laid bare. Even Ian Crocker couldn’t resist a dig at the pain and discomfort of his Sky Sports colleague.
“Celtic had not conceded a penalty before the introduction of VAR but have lost seven since October”.
