Malky Thomson has been axed from his role in charge of the Ibrox Women’s team and returned to his role within the club’s Academy structure.

On Sunday Thomson, known as the baby-sitter inside the game, had the chance to deliver the SWPL title on home soil but a typically turgid performance saw the Ibrox Women’s team finish third in a three horse race as Glasgow City celebrated.

Since the start of April Douglas Park, Stewart Robertson, Ross Wilson, Craig Mulholland and Andrew Dickson have left the club or stepped down from their position with Thomson apparently entitled to a job for life.

This morning the club announced:

RANGERS Football Club can today confirm Malky Thomson will leave his role as women’s head coach following Sunday’s Scottish Cup Final and return to his position within the club’s Academy.

Malky has overseen many historic achievements in the team’s journey as Rangers transitioned to being Scotland’s first full-time professional women’s set-up, which is fully integrated at the training ground.

He was responsible for the club’s first-ever SWPL league title in season 2021/22, completing the league season undefeated. He has followed this by winning the club’s first Sky Sports Cup earlier this season at Tynecastle, beating Hibernian in the final.

Incoming Chief Executive, James Bisgrove, commented: “Malky has achieved historic successes and will be remembered as the coach who led us to our first-ever league title and first journey in the Champions League.

“When Malky was asked to leave his Academy role and become women’s head coach, he did so with great energy and enthusiasm. Phase one of our women’s football strategy was to create Scotland’s first full-time professional, fully-integrated team.

“Malky then led us through phase two, as we won our first-ever trophies, and the club had always agreed with him that, as we entered phase three of the strategy, he would return to his Academy position, where his experience will be invaluable.”

It is believed that Allan McGregor and Steve Davis are the leading candidates to replace Thomson in charge of the Women’s Team with head-butt shamed Craig McPherson an outside bet.

What about the assistant coach nutter (pun intended) MC Pherson ,does he keep his job ? If so ,it’s another example of the total acceptance of violence while attending the work place in Scotland … It just fills the heart with dignity ,doesn’t it !

Hi Joe – I know that you know it’s Douglas Park that left in April, unless you’re in cryptic mode today?

Editor: Well spotted, updated. Wee Douglas will forever be loyal and true.
