Susan Aitken has become the latest politician to criticise the behaviour of Celtic fans celebrating their team winning the SPFL Premiership title.

Following Saturday’s 5-0 win over Aberdeen thousands of fans headed to Glasgow Cross and The Trongate where they sang songs, enjoyed drinks and let off smoke bombs and pyro turning the air green for short periods.

Traffic was brought to a standstill, buses were rerouted but there was no need for the Police to be called in or evidence of violence.

There were a few incidents that shouldn’t have happened such as fans falling through the roof of a bus shelter but across the city centre at any given weekend there are similar incidents that require repair work.

Glasgow has multiple issues to deal with at the moment but speaking to Glasgow Times the Council leader said:

Our brilliant Council city centre teams really rise to these occasions, often working overnight so that litter and debris are completely gone by the following day.

But recently, what should be good-natured celebrations have spilled over into something uglier, with local residents and businesses subjected to disruption and anti-social behaviour well beyond what can be considered tolerable.

It was really disappointing this happened yet again with the celebrations of Celtic’s SPFL victory over the weekend. Litter is one thing but people’s safety being put at risk simply isn’t acceptable.

Last August Glasgow City Council twice asked residents not to put rubbish out for collection due to strike action from council workers, city centre bins weren’t emptied between August 24 and September 1 and again from September 7 to 10.

With Celtic playing in the Scottish Cup Final on Saturday there is the prospect of further celebrations in the city centre.
