Paul Larkin has produced a documentary that shines a light into the 2015 Scottish Cup semi-final between Celtic and Inverness Caley Thistle.

The referee that day, Steven McLean will be on VAR duty for today’s rematch at Hampden, his shocking decision making has had no ill-effect on a very lucrative secondary career at the SFA, protected by Stewart Regan and Ian Maxwell, both close friends of Peter Lawwell.

Midway through the first half, with Celtic leading 1-0 Leigh Griffiths headed the ball towards an open goal. Josh Meekings raised his right arm, in full view of McLean, Additional Assistant Alan Muir and Assistant Frank Connor.

None of them signalled for handball that they all watched in clear view, Celtic didn’t get a penalty, Meekings wasn’t sent off.

Early in the second half the same group of officials spotted a foul by Craig Gordon, the keeper was sent off, Caley Thistle scored with a penalty and went on to win the match 3-2 after extra-time.

On 20th April 2015 Celtic stated:

WITH the Club being inundated today, Celtic can confirm that it has written to the SFA regarding yesterday’s match and in particular the incident involving Leigh Griffiths and Josh Meekings.

First and foremost we absolutely congratulate Inverness Caledonian Thistle on reaching the Scottish Cup final. They are a fantastic club and reaching the final is a great achievement.

However, given the level of reaction from our supporters and across football, we are duty bound to seek an understanding of what actually happened.

We have not been given any other specific explanation so far and this is simply to understand the circumstances of what went on and why such an obvious error was made.

Eight years later no explanation has ever been given for how three SFA match officials all managed to miss an obvious penalty and red card. McLean, Muir and Connor remain on the lucrative SFA circuit of match fees and expenses.

There was never any follow up comment from Celtic as they accepted future matches involving all three officials. Muir, from Aberdeen took charge of last Saturday’s final SPFL match of the season, a few weeks earlier McLean refereed the Glasgow Derby on the Field of Dreams for his younger brother who twice played for Northern Ireland despite not being eligible for them.

It is strongly suspected that the SFA reminded Lawwell about his worries during the summer of 2012, the Five Way Agreement and the resumption of the fixture he loved being just over a year away.

Did your team not win lads?

Even if they all”missed” the “incident”, Meekings’ fall to the ground in utter anguish told you it was a penalty.
