Brendan Rodgers issues spending warning

Brendan Rodgers is in no rush to spend big in the transfer market.

On the back of a domestic treble and preparing for a second successive campaign in the Champions League it was believed that the Irishman had more than the £20m made available to Ange Postecoglou a year ago to invest in his squad.

Close to £20m was picked up after Benfica had been paid their cut of the fee for Jota but so far Celtic have spent around £4m bringing in Odin Thiago Holm and Marco Tilio.

Less than that should be enough to snap up Korean duo Kwon Hyeok-kyu and Yang Hyun-jun but none of those arrivals are expected to go straight into the Starting XI.

Celtic face trips to Pittodrie and Ibrox in the first four rounds of fixtures but speaking to the Daily Record the hoops boss admitted that the funds are there but won’t be spent for the sake of it:

Yes, there’s money there, but it doesn’t always mean if you spend £9m or £10m you are going to get a top player. There might be someone within your academy or someone at £2m or £3m that can become a £20m or £30m player. My strength is development and I’ve working closely with the people here to improve the squad.

Last summer Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers cost around £6.5m each with fees of £3m spent on Alexandro Bernabei and Sead Haksabanovic.

Brendan might well need a big January window depending on – Cheats with whistles (Scottish referees) – Cheats with moniters (Scottish VAR officials) – On field unpunished thuggery related maimed players – And of course The up and coming Asian Cup…

Maybe saving a little for some rainy days in January !

That’s the foundations layed for no big spending then, KERCHING£ to LIEWELL and the rest for their bonuses.

  • John Copeland says:

Four , £5 million pound players bought in the same week would blow the rest out of Scottish football out of the water .We all know £10 mill + players will be difficult to buy , but considering the injury problems and the rude health of the finances at present , those type of purchases should be standard policy and easily affordable . Even the embarrassing tabloids and their scoops would be impressed with such ambition from Celtic FC ! Be in the moment !!!
