Brendan Rodgers has delivered a detailed update on his injured defenders.
Four central defenders were missing from central defence against Wolves in Dublin while the two options for right back sat the match out.
Stephen Welsh and Liam Scales played together for 66 minutes before the former Scotland u-21 skipper was taken off as a precaution, at right-back Tomoki Iwata started in that role before moving inside to join Scales while Ben McPherson came on at right-back.
It is a worrying scene less than a week before the start of the season. Fitness is one thing but match fitness is very different, whatever partnerships start against Ross County and Aberdeen are likely to be short on preparations having missed out on parts of the pre-season which stretched from the Algarve to Japan before being topped up at Lennoxtown.
Going through his injury worries, Rodgers told The Sun:
Carl twisted his ankle, so he couldn’t travel. Hopefully he’ll be okay for Tuesday. Kobayashi will be out for a few weeks. He obviously got injured in one of the games in Japan.
Maik tweaked his ankle before he trained with us but hopefully he’ll be okay for Tuesday. Hopefully Tony and Cam won’t be too far away. They’ve come back training with the squad. It was too soon for them to play.
They’ll be back with us in the morning for training and then we’ll see where they’re at for Tuesday.
Tuesday’s match against Athletic Club Bilbao becomes a vital fitness test but also carries risks, the last thing that Rodgers needs is any setbacks or fresh worries four days before the season starts.
There was no mention of Alistair Johnston’s fitness, suggesting that the Canadian is some way off returning to action.
