Kris Boyd did his best to put a brave face on last night’s hammering for his heroes in Eindhoven.

After a 2-2 draw in the first leg the former Rangers striker was confident that Micky Beale could repeat Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s achievement of winning in Holland to book a place in the group stage of the Champions League.

Beale finished last season with the Dead Rubber Trophy on his CV then followed that up with the Transfer Window Cup after having an incredible nine new signings in the door before the SPFL opener away at Kilmarnock.

Only three of the summer signings made last night’s Starting XI which suggests that Beale is already losing faith in his own judgement as Jack Butland, Jose Cifuentes and Cyriel Dessers joined last season’s losers as the Champions League anthem played around the Phillips Stadium.

Ninety minutes later Beale was grateful that it was only a 5-1 defeat that he was nursing with PSV superior in every area.

During the summer the Ibrox recruitment drive spent £6m on super-sub Danilo from Feyenoord, £3.5m on former PSV youth star Sam Lammers from Atalanta and £4.5m on Dessers who we’d been told for a fortnight had scored goals for fun against PSV.

It looks like Beale signed the wrong players from the Eredivisie with the Daily Record listening to Boyd’s suffering last night on Sky Sports News:

The excuses will come out about the finances and everything. It was the exact same as last year so you can’t use that.

Rangers went there optimistic of getting a result. The gulf in class was there for everyone to see. Rangers got back into at 2-1 o the night but was against the run of play.

PSV Eindhoven, the players they had, they spoke about there was an arrogance about them after the first game, they thought the tie was already done. They showed why, they have absolutely demolished Rangers, demolished them.

You can make all the excuses you want. Rangers went there and won last season, the budgets were the exact same. It’s not to be for Rangers. Totally annihilated in the Netherlands and it will be the Europa League.

The draw for the Europa League will take place tomorrow with Ajax and Liverpool also involved.

There is no difference in budgets etc SEVCO have a similar turnover to PSV, look at the finances over the last few years, SEVCO have a turnover bigger than PSV in some years.
