Craig Moore has claimed that Brendan Rodgers’ squad is mentally stronger than Micky Beale’s.

Having ability and talent is one thing that coaches can work with but there isn’t much that can be done if you are mentally weak.

Going into the international break the Glasgow Derby was going to have a huge impact on the early part of the season.

With Cameron Carter-Vickers, Maik Nawrocki and Stephen Welsh out injured Rodgers turned to Liverpool, signing Nat Phillips on loan for a much needed defensive boost.

The loan bhoy wasn’t considered ready to play in the Derby which cleared the way for Liam Scales, possibly the sixth choice central defender to come in for his second Celtic appearance in 18 months.

The odds seemed to be stacked against Scales and Celtic but as well as a win bonus the former Shamrock Rovers defender was Man of the Match for many judges.

Listening in to Go Radio, The Sun reports Moore saying:

I feel a little bit silly I’ve got to say because at the start of the season again, when I was looking on paper, the Celtic squad in terms of the lack of maybe business that they had done and the business that Rangers done, I’m going well, ‘Rangers are the strongest squad’.

I’ve said this a couple of times but paper doesn’t win you football matches. So far, that hasn’t transferred to match day. I’ll tell you what the difference is at this moment in time, mentally, Celtic are stronger.

Over that 90 plus minutes Celtic demonstrated superior squad depth and mentality, while an inquest rages on at Ibrox things have appeared fairly tranquil at Celtic.

With a win at Ibrox in the locker Celtic fans will be looking for their side to go from strength to strength with Rodgers again demonstrating that he is a master of the fixture that tends to decide the biggest prizes in Scottish football.

I did a double-take when I read the bit about him thinking Sevco had a stronger squad than us. Must’ve been reading the Daily Record again….

  • Clachnacuddin and the Hoops says:

I did not like him as a player as he was a really dirty ‘bar steward’ for sure…

Clearly like the rest of the ex Sevco players, his wishful thinking and dreams over rode the actual situation on the field of play –

However credit where it’s due to his now very honest assessment – as honestly is a commodity seldom found with anyone who has a connection to Sevco and Liebrox…

He’ll no doubt now be on the ‘banned list’ and hopefully his car and house windows are secure and safe !
