Chris Sutton has warned Philippe Clement that he is in for a brief Ibrox honeymoon.

Taking on the carnage created by Micky Beale the Belgian faces multiple challenges instantly not helped by the fawning welcome that he has received from the Scottish media.

Almost every angle has been explored to portray the former Monaco boss in a glowing light on the back of winning three league titles in Belgium.

That won’t really prepare him for trying to show James Tavernier and Connor Goldson how to defend or to get something out of the disillusioned players that have been signed onto long term contracts over the last two summers.

If Celtic win their matches away to Hearts and Hibs the daunting task facing Clement will be underlined with Sutton one of the few pundits able to apply some reality for the new Ibrox boss.

Picking up on an appearance on BBC Five Live, the Daily Record reports the former Celtic striker saying:

Clement has won things in Belgium, unlike the ‘great Messiah’ Michael Beale. We’ll be fair to the new boss and give him 45 minutes….

His track record is a big thing, he’s won three titles in Belgium then did OK at Monaco. Now if he comes in, talks basic football sense, then it’s about the way he coaches.

He’s got to hit the ground running, Celtic haven’t been at their best and will get there but there’s 30 games left and they play Celtic three times. The biggest issue he has is the players Rangers recruited haven’t shown up. He’s got to get the most out of them.

Despite his high profile on the BBC in England Sutton hasn’t appeared on Radio Scotland for 10 years despite their massive output.

It seems that the state broadcaster prefers to play it safe, sharing the views of Kenny Macintyre, Steven Thompson, Alasdair Lamont, Tom English, Kenny Miller, Jane Lewis, Neil McCann and Lee McCulloch.
