Last season in the Champions League, regardless of who started, Ange Postecoglou had a tasty weapon to turn to between the 60th and 70th minutes.

Whether it was Giorgos Giakoumais or Kyogo Furuhashi getting sent on there was a live threat, something different after one or the other had ran themselves into the ground for the cause.

Last night Brendan Rodgers didn’t have that option. With the game getting away from Celtic James Forrest replaced Kyogo, Daizen Maeda went central but Giakoumakis he isn’t.

Oh Hyeon-gyu sat on the bench unused, in the two previous Champions League matches he had played for a combined 12 minutes.

In the MLS Giakoumakis has scored 17 goals in 1,792 minutes, exactly the sort of scoring rate that Celtic are looking for in a striker.

The failings of the summer transfer window were noticeable last night with just Luis Palma in the starting XI.

In January the spotlight is firmly on Mark Lawwell to give Rodgers the tools that he needs to do his job.
