When he returned to Celtic in the summer Glen Driscoll was the only front line coach that Brendan Rodgers brought with him.
Ange Postecoglou’s ‘lone wolf’ approach had been something of a surprise when he arrived solo in 2021 and got to work on the training ground at Lennoxtown with the players and coaching staff that he inherited.
A year into the job the former Socceroos boss brought in Harry Kewell, the poster boy for a generation of football fans in Australia but someone who had struggled to make any in-roads with management.
When Postecoglou left for Spurs it would have seemed logical for Kewell to head back to the EPL but after his earlier struggles in coaching it seems that the former Leeds and Liverpool man has found his happy place at Lennoxtown.
Kewell seems very happy with a low profile backroom job with Rodgers telling the Daily Record how happy he is to have a real top level player beside him on the training ground and in the dug-out:
I didn’t know Harry and Gavin (Strachan) when I came back but I met Harry prior to taking the job and had a chat with him at my house down south. And I have to say, for a player who was world class in his pomp, the commitment he has to being here at Celtic and helping our wingers is very good.
With former players like him, they give you that little bit of gold dust. He shares that with the players and he’s good for our team. He gives us a different viewpoint.
The coaches have a specific number of players they work with on different elements of their game. An incredible amount of work goes on here, from all of the coaches, to help the players develop.
Kewell has a special role working with the Celtic wingers, the recent form of Luis Palma suggests that he is certainly getting his ideas through and producing results.
I did seriously wonder what his role was…and now I’m puzzled…and this might sound arrogant…but as a former winger myself…I can’t imagine being told by anyone how to play that role.
As a winger you do most things by instinct ..and you can’t teach that.
However…he’s got a well paid gig…so good luck to him.
http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk gives Glen Driscoll’s current role as
“Without A Club”.
So, Rodgers returned to Celtic himself!
That is completely different from his first stint at the Club!
