Michael Stewart got close to calling out the latest scenario being used by Scottish referees to ensure a title challenge from Ibrox.

Over the last month Hearts, Aberdeen and Dundee have all been victims of a similar ploy with Philippe Clement still guarding an unbeaten record.

Dundee had taken a fifth minute lead at Ibrox, Cyriel Dessers cancelled that out with a very legitimate goal when the favoured new tactic was called on early in the match.

Trailing to Hearts and Aberdeen in the 88th minute Connor Goldson performed what is clearly a well rehearsed move from a corner kick with John Beaton and Nick Walsh obliging by handing the ball to James Tavernier to do his thing.

Yesterday it was Abdallah Sima’s turn to step up. Moving into the penalty box he got close to Aaron Donnelly and pulled his shirt. The natural reaction is to do the same, even in your own penalty box, Sima then moves away, Donnelly has a handful of his jersey with Kevin Clancy and Ayrshire Blue Greg Aitken on VAR all eyes to pick up on it.

On Thursday night a non-Scottish referee will be in charge of the Europa League tie away to Real Betis. At  Hampden on Sunday Don Robertson will referee in his first Cup Final. He knows the consequences of getting things wrong, for back up he has Andrew Dallas on VAR.

Asked about refereeing issues at last month’s Celtic AGM Peter Lawwell and Michael Nicholson turned on their slapstick routine.
