Brendan Rodgers reveals Celtic’s transfer ceiling

Image for Brendan Rodgers reveals Celtic’s transfer ceiling

Brendan Rodgers has laid out the transfer boundaries that he is working with at Celtic.

In the summer of 2018 Odsonne Edouard was signed for £9m from Paris Saint Germain with that figure still standing as the club record.

During the summer the highest fee paid out was for £4.3m to Legia Warsaw for Maik Nawrocki with none of the other arrivals costing more than £3m.

That limit has continued into the January window with £3m paid for Nicolas Kuhn with the Celtic boss highlighting his need for four quality additions.

Celtic’s £70m bank balance at the end of June raised expectations that significant sums could be spent on players but Rodgers explained to the Daily Record why he won’t be making any £20m signings:

It’s very difficult. The money’s there but that won’t happen. If you’re bringing in a £20m player then you’re taking a £20m player’s wages. That doesn’t work here sadly. We’re not in that ball park.

That (£6m-£7m ) is realistic. I think we’ve done that. This isn’t new. You look before when they signed Carter-Vickers or Jota for £6m-£7m. The evidence is there that they do that. But £20m?

I’m just looking at good players. The money thing is irrelevant to me. As you’ll see some duds. I only look at the level of player I can get to. I don’t necessarily say, ‘give me a £7m player’. He might not be as good as a £2m player who has a capacity to grow.

So for me it’s about the level of player who’s going to come in and improve us and not just sit in behind someone. They have to really compete.

With less than a week to go in the transfer window it looks more likely than any arrivals will be on loan as Rodgers looks to deliver a double trophy success on his return to Celtic.

    If life deals you lemons…

Sevco are as bad as all they have to do is sign Shankland and they have won the league and the megamillions European slot but they go out and spend, according to the media, £4million on a midfielder.
    Go figure.

I remember when Morelos was playing for them and he missed around 5 or 6 sitters in the Glasgow deby all I could think of was thank God they didn’t have a decent striker.

I think they are in the same position with Dessers but don’t tell them…

Starting to think that BR should maybe not say anything more about signings?

    I’m reading the above as:

No chance of a £20M player – and no chance of a £7M player either.

Ergo, ‘project player level’ priced players are what BR is looking at…?

Last time, BR just upped sticks mid-season, and p!ssed off to Leicester.

This time, BR seems to be making the excuses for the impoverished

recruitment – whilst PL salivates over the growing cash pile! 🙁

Ted will end up at Forrest Green if he keeps this shite up.

  • KC67 says:

£6-7m players should be the norm for a club of our size, not the exception. Supplemented by the odd £2-3m development player.

But that only happens at a serious football club.

Cut the crap and sign Shankland and a left back. You really are starting to get on ma thruppenny bits.As are the board.

As far as I’m aware, nobody is expecting, or even talking about a £20 million player so why TF say it? But 3 x £6-7 million players is probably what’s needed. Keeper, LB and striker.

We’ve (sorry Peter) sat on our/his hands (and bank balance again) and that’s got the fat baztard’s stench all over it.

Just WTF is his son being paid for? To carry out Daddy’s instructions?

We’ve known, as supporters, what we need and all we’re being fed is bullshit.

Disappointingly BR is as much to blame as anyone as he’s just spewing crap every time he opens his mouth and which I feel is being provided by Lawwell.

I’d dearly love to see BR’s contract and exactly what restrictions have been placed on him, or is he just another, untrustworthy, tory baztard?
WE SHOULD BE CELEBRATING BY NOW……..
