Brendan Rodgers has revealed that contract talks have opened between Celtic and Cameron Carter-Vickers.

After a highly successful season on loan the defender signed a four year contract in the summer of 2022 with a fee in the region of £6m heading towards Spurs.

Despite being younger than Carl Starfelt and Josip Juranovic it was Carter-Vickers that brought composure and organisational skills to the Celtic defence as Ange Postecoglou imposed his style on Celtic’s play.

Juranovic and Starfelt have moved on to Germany and Spain, in midweek a report from the USA suggested that there was strong English interest in the former Spurs man.

Even though he is less than halfway through a contract these issues need addressed with Rodgers telling The Sun about Celtic’s intentions for their top defender:

There is no doubt Cam is one of the pillars of the team and of course we would want to do that. That will happen in time, I’m sure.

There have been talks between the club and his representatives, so let’s see where it goes. Is he an English Premier League standard player? I think from what I’ve seen and from what I’ve worked with he can play at that level.

He needed to come away and find the pressures here. But there’s no doubt he has all the tools but his happiness is here. He and his partner absolutely love it up here. We would be keen to keep him here.

Carter-Vickers will miss today’s Scottish Cup tie against Buckie Thistle due to injury but should be in contention to face Ross County next Saturday.
