Chris Sutton has included Brendan Rodgers by slamming Celtic’s January recruitment as bonkers.

At his broadcast media conference today the Irishman agreed with supporters that the club could have been braver during the window that brought in Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah.

Presumably that meant raising the ceiling on transfer fees and wages on offer to lure players needed to a squad that had barely been strengthened over the three previous windows.

Rodgers has to face up to the questions, in the background there is a CEO and Chairman dictating policy with a Head of Scouting and Recruitment responsible for bringing in first team ready players.

Celtic face three demanding away games over the next nine days, over that period it should become evident if Rodgers is capable of delivering honours this season.

Reacting to the transfer activity Sutton told the Daily Record:

You look back to last summer when Rodgers returned. It was Celtic making a serious statement after Postecoglou’s departure and looking to take the club to the next level.

Rodgers himself was cool on talk about record signings and whatever – but there has to be a middle ground. Look at his net spend in the two windows – if anything Celtic are in profit. In fact, got back to his first spell and he’s more than balanced the books across seven transfer windows. That’s not brave. It’s bonkers.

The recruitment department has a lot to answer for. Celtic has historically had a list of targets as long as your arm and if one doesn’t land they go to the next. Have they lost the list down the back of the couch?

You can’t seriously tell me in the six months since the summer window there isn’t a left back in the world that can come in and compete with or cover for Greg Taylor. You can’t claim Adah was a long term target and then bring him in on a deal just until the end of the season.

People are not daft. Fans will hammer Peter Lawwell and his son Mark as head of recruitment and maybe that’s fair game. Michael Nicholson took the plaudits under Ange and as CEO and will get flak now. But Rodgers is also culpable. He has the final say over transfers and the buck stops with the manager over comings and goings.

Sutton will be part of the Sky Sports team covering Saturday’s SPFL trip to managerless Aberdeen.

Sutton should chill out and follow the example of John Hartson a true Celt

Yes, just do about enough to stay a hair’s breadth ahead of NewCo and that will be sufficient. We’re Not Part of Anything, wink wink

The buck doesn’t stop with him if his bosses won’t for whatever reason realease a reasonable amount of money of which £3 million out of £72 million is fcukin appaling !!!

You actually need to have something offered to you, to have the final say, and after there have been none, and you get offered a player, you gonna choose to say no to the crumbs?.

Chris Sutton, as intelligent as he is, has no idea of Michael Nicholson’s full role
as CEO of Celtic. He should ask the man himself. Michael is not in the least partly culpable.
Chris, ask him to give a presentation of what he does. He has been a greatly misrepresented person. Michael as CEO does not select prospective Players to buy , sell , loan in or loan out.
As CEO he is part of the conversation and reporting, because he oversees everything that occurs,
in the running of the Club. The majority of Fans know that Michael processes
Players Legal Contracts. These negiotations are very time consuming. Chris knows this part well.
    I would expect, Michael has been expremely busy from the first week of January until today;
    and will be beyond.

Editor: In two and a half years as CEO Nicholson has said SFA outside of AGM requirements, probably because his entire career at Celtic has been dependent on his mentor, the now Chairman.

    • Clachnacuddin and the Hoops says:

Editor: – Oh the mentor had plenty to say when it suited, unfortunately bragging about a balance sheet account does SFA for 99.9% Of Celtic supporters and unfortunately for me not challenging or saying anything about the survival lies of Doncaster was the final straw in me paying through a turnstile to see Celtic live at Parkhead or anywhere else…

Nicholson meanwhile is The invisible Man – But with all the evil and twisted lies of the Scottish Football Media reported on here and other Celtic Forums, I can’t say I blame his stance –

However a wee interview on the club’s in house TV channel from time to time wouldn’t go amiss even though it would probably be answering his own set questions !

  • Kevin Lee says:

I blame Desmond for giving that ineptitude of a board a 66% wage increase for bringing in two inferior players on loan talk about taking the pish.

  • Davie says:

The dictatorship directors at Celtic only seem to be interested in the profit in the bank, how long will it take them to siphon that off with paying themselves profit bonus,, I know some don’t gain but Nicholson & Lawell jnr do.
A whole clearcut with directors has to happen, getting paid a bonus for failure must stop.
As far as I’m concerned Rodgers has destroyed a fast flowing winning team, the same old passing everywhere but forward is boring and restricts chances being created.
Rodgers previously left with a team in decline, Lennon finished it off.
The same story is unfolding, Rodgers is not fit for celtic.
You can post that he was the invincibles, but seriously WHO WAS THERE TO CHALLENGE HIM.
As soon as Gerrard got some flow in his ordinary team, Rodgers ran away.
    He then destroyed Leicester.
Should the situation continue as we did with Lennon, then the league will be gifted to The Rangers.
The Board & Rodgers have to go.
