Ben Siegrist is a potential summer transfer target for Aberdeen.

The ‘keeper joined Celtic as a free agent from Dundee United in the summer of 2022 but has yet to play in an SPFL match.

Siegrist played in two League Cup ties last season but from the start of 2023 Scott Bain was restored as second choice keeper.

This season the former Tannadice man has made just one appearance on the bench, at Motherwell in September when Joe Hart was suspended, and was left out of Celtic’s Champions League squad.

Despite 20 months with just 180 minutes of playing time on his CV the Daily Record reports:

Aberdeen are considering a summer move for Celtic keeper Benjy Siegrist.

The Dons No. 1 Kelle Roos is out of contract at the end of the season and has still to commit to a new deal.

The Pittodrie recruitment team is covering all bases and looking at alternative options should Roos decide to move on and Record Sport understands Celtic keeper Siegrist is on a shortlist of potential summer options.

The Aberdeen board are looking for a long-term manager whilst an on-going external review of the running of the Pittodrie club is being carried out. Neil Warnock has been put in interim charge for the season but director of football Steven Gunn and his new head of recruitment Chris Badlan are both continuing work on player options and targets.

Aberdeen also have Ross Doohan, who made his debut in the Scottish Cup win over Bonnyrigg Rose, but will want to run with another experienced keeper if Roos moves on.

With his Celtic contract running until May 2026 any move to Aberdeen for Siegrist is likely to be on loan with little chance of the Dons matching his current salary.

A loan would mean that the Swiss keeper would have to drop out for matches against the hoops which is less than ideal for building up understandings in defence.

There would appear to be virtually no prospect of Siegrist progressing at Celtic, having recently turned 32 he has to decide whether he wants to hang around for two more years on a good salary or decide to get out and resume his playing career.

If you follow Benji’s missus’ antics on insta you’ll be aware he is in a long-distance relationship with an Australian ‘celeb’ so I doubt commuting from Furryboots City to Melbourne holds too much appeal. When he leaves, I imagine it’ll be to the sunnier climes of the A-league.
