Many loyal bears have been left with worthless travel bookings this morning after their heroes crashed out of the Europa League.

Since UEFA announced Dublin as the venue for the 2024 Europa League final thousands have been planning to export their hatred to the Irish capital for the first time in 40 years.

The 1984 UEFA Cup tie with Bohemians was marked by day long riots in Dublin as the locals refused to hand their city over to the marching bands from Larkhall, Bridgeton, Bearsden, Kilwinning and the natives from other towns locked in the dark ages.

When the old Rangers club were drawn against Shelbourne in 1998 UEFA switched the Dublin match to Tranmere’s ground but that simply resulted in a siege of Birkenhead and Liverpool.

With Philippe Clement working daily miracles the stage was finally set for an assault on the Irish capital with canny bears booking in advance to ensure that they’d be on the spot for the action.

UEFA and the Irish Tourist Board were said to be delighted by last night’s results.

With two English teams, three from Italy plus clubs from Portugal, France and Germany into the last eight the final looks like being an exceptional match and event without worrying about the bears coming to town.

The capacity of the Aviva Stadium is just over 50,000 but Croke Park could now host a fanzone with a capacity of 80,000.
